CHRISTIAN DARLEY 'THE SPACE TO MOVE, ESSENTIALS OF MOVEMENT TRAINING'

Christian Darley’s book The Space to Move, Essentials of Movement Training has been published by the Nick Hern Books Limited two years after her death in 2008, when she was still in her forties. Christian has been one of the Skyros ‘regulars’, teaching there year after year until she could no longer work due to illness which she fought bravely for years. She loved Skyros and was loved by all those who had joined her course. Her delightful and inspirational presence, her energy and ideas, her passion for her work and her commitment to her students’ progress had made her a most valuable member of the Skyros team. We miss her a lot.

Her book on the vital building blocks of movement training is a key sourcebook for actors, directors, students and teachers. In precise detail, Christian sets out the exercises and techniques she developed with her own drama-school students. She deals with the vital building blocks of movement training: awareness, relaxation, tension—particularly Lecoq's Seven States—and suspension, before progressing to areas in which she was a pioneer: animal work, contact work, visual spacing, and the relationship between voice and movement.

Christian had studied classics at Oxford and training in movement in Paris. She taught movement at LAMDA and was movement director on many productions there and elsewhere. She also conducted various community workshops and took her work into prisons and schools. Her book, which she finished just before her death, cannot fail to inspire and instruct all practitioners who seek to incorporate movement into actor training or theatre work in general.
