Aspects of Novel Writing Fri 5 - Sun 7 Apr 2013 IoW
Whether you’re just beginning to organise your ideas or working on your next ‘opus’ this course is aimed at giving you a clear understanding of the technical and creative aspects of novel writing. Along with exercises and inspiration to get you going (drawing on experience, memory, imagination and place) there will be opportunities to share pieces of your writing in a relaxed and supportive setting. You will also receive constructive feedback on the work you produce in the sessions.
Focussing on structure, character, plot and voice we’ll work on planning an extended narrative (and developing a shorter piece of work by the end of the week). We’ll look at the elements that drive your narrative forward and keep the reader wanting more. And we won’t forget the nitty-gritty of prose-style – writing strong dialogue, streamlining scenes and sentences – and how it all comes together to create impact.
Finally the course aims to furnish you with solid strategies so that when you leave the idyllic, creative bubble that is Skyros you will be able to draw on those resources and keep your writing momentum going well into the future.

The Art of Fiction Writing Fri 26 - Sun 28 Apr 2013 IoW
First of all we will look at the large scale shape of a story – the macro view, and how to plan a piece of work that doesn’t just dry up after 20 pages. We will explore the engineering of what agents and publishers call ‘traction’ – that is, the feeling that a story is pulling you through it.
We will arrive at an understanding of how feelings are evoked in a story – how writers conjure emotion to sustain and gratify readers with a vicarious experience of life, which at its best is just as powerful as the original.
Throughout, we will keep an eye on the different motivations for writing. We all write for different reasons, and we need to define accurately what it is we want to get out of writing, what we want to give. This motivation, after all, is the mainspring of our energy, and if it’s in good shape it will give us the impetus to start and to complete the work, and finish it to a high standard.

Inside and Out - A colour, painting and collage workshop
Learning to look at life and the world through the eyes of an artist is about really seeing what is immediately around us; listening to what is moving us; and responding through self-expression.
The aim of this course is to introduce you to some techniques that will help you see the world around you in a new way and to express your inner responses to what you experience.
How we see the world and ourselves is often coloured by how we feel - we "see red", "get the blues", "go green with envy" - so getting to know colours is the starting point of this workshop. Through simple painting exercises, some in pairs, you will explore the characters and qualities of the individual colours - what they say about us; what they can do for us; and how we can use them to transform our inner and outer lives. Once equipped with this new language of expression, experimentation can begin. Following your own inner direction or allowing the surrounding vistas to inspire and guide you, you will be encouraged to play with a variety of materials and techniques to best bring your ideas to fruition.
The technique of collage using printed images you have selected and/or brought with you, can create a starting point to which you can apply atmosphere, emotion and details in paint, pencil, crayon etc.
All are welcome whether you are a beginner or would like new input into your existing creative practice.
Please bring with you some printed material / images that resonate with you e.g.photographs (copies if you want the originals to remain intact), magazine cuttings, postcards, poems, pages of a book, maps - absolutely anything that you are attracted to for the colours, content, imagery, meaning etc. And while I will provide the essential art materials, please do bring any paints, crayons, brushes etc that you might like to use. There will be a small charge for materials used.
Arrivals are from 4pm on Friday afternoon. Dinner, if requested, is at 7:30pm and this will be followed by an introduction of the course and a get together. Sessions will begin on Saturday morning from 10:30 to 12:30, Saturday afternoon from 5:00 to 7:00, Sunday morning from from 10:30 to 12:30, Sunday afternoon from 5:00 to 7:00 and the final session will be on Monday morning from 10:30 to 12:30.

The Path of Happiness Fri 18 - Sun 20 Oct 2013 IoW
Feeling good, but could feel better? What about those people who always seem to be happy in their lives? Wouldn’t it be great to be more like them more often? The key to happiness is to identify and build on our personal strengths, and not to waste too much time working on our weaknesses. However we also need to develop emotional intelligence and mindful awareness, so we do not dwell too much on the past or the uncertainties of the future, and can have more ‘here and now’ choice in our relationships and our life path.
Positive Psychology, based on the latest research, focuses on what makes some people happier and healthier than others, rather than just focussing on what makes us depressed or ill.
The course will focus on finding your sense of meaning and purpose, learning to live in the here and now, letting go into pleasure, developing emotional resilience and finding connection with others. All this and lots of fun too!

We are all born with the freedom to dance. This freedom is innate but can go underground, obscured by the ‘stuff’ of life. During this course we will learn to listen to our body, and to surrender bit by bit to its unique dance. We will dance to gently wake up to our creativity, to love power, ecstasy, acceptance, playfulness and sensuality. We will discover our body loves to dance and find ourselves making moves we never knew we could make.
There will also be space to share our experiences and stories in words so that we can both learn from, and be touched by each other. No previous dance experience is required, just a courage and willingness to practice stepping onto the dance floor and moving with who we are, and how we are, moment to moment.
